Tricia Downing is a corporate Learning Designer. Prior to transitioning to her current role, Tricia's life revolved around athletics. She is a Paralympian, competing in the sport of shooting at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has also competed at the World Championship level in both rowing and triathlon. Although athletics has been a constant in her life, the way she approached it drastically changed after she was struck by a car on a bicycle ride in September of 2000, becoming instantly paralyzed from the chest down. Despite her injury, Tricia has continued to participate in sports, in addition to being a disability advocate, professional speaker, and author of three books. She holds master's degrees in both Sport Management and Disability Studies and graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in Journalism.

Bertina Ceccarelli is the Chief Executive Officer of NPower, a national tech training and job placement nonprofit, rooted in community, and on a mission to advance equity in the tech industry. She joined NPower in 2016 with a passion to disrupt the status quo and build a more inclusive workplace. Under her visionary leadership, NPower has grown from $6 million to a $24 million organization, tripling their staff and expanding their proven program to four new cities. 

Bertina’s commitment to helping young adults and military-connected individuals launch tech careers and break social and economic mobility barriers has led to her involvement in strategic alliance organizations including: Founding member of TechPact; member, CEO Action; steering committee member, American’s Promise; Wall Street Journal CEO Council; as well as membership on Forbes Council and Concordia communities.  She was named as one of the Tech Industry's Brightest Superstars by the US Black Engineer & IT magazine.

An engineer by training, Bertina has worked as a technology leader at Procter & Gamble and NBC before pivoting to the nonprofit sector. Growing up in a working-class family and the first to graduate from high school, she was drawn to a community that once supported her own educational endeavors. After a successful career in the corporate sector, Bertina chose to transition her skills to the nonprofit sector.  Bertina held senior leadership roles at United Way of New York City and the Wildlife Conservation Society where she was responsible for generating over $85 million annually in programmatic and unrestricted funds.   She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.

She is an engaged storyteller, who leads with heart, committed to moving the mission of NPower to new heights.  She is the co-author, together with Susanne Tedrick, of the upcoming book, “Innovating for Diversity: Lessons from Top Companies that are Disrupting Old Practices to Achieve Inclusivity, Equity and Business Success” to be published by Wiley March 2023.

As the former founder/CEO of an auto finance start-up, Sonia is passionate about entrepreneurship and developing communities to support founders. She is one of the co-founders and President of the Board of Village Up, a collaborative initiative to increase diversity in and access to the San Diego innovation economy. She is also on the Board of NuFund Venture Group. Sonia has a BA from UPenn and a JD from Yale Law. She is a member of the California and New York Bars. Taryell Simmons is an HR Services Manager for the Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Division in the County of San Diego. The Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Division aspires to help create and sustain a countywide culture of belonging and interconnectedness. Taryell and his team have collaborated with various stakeholders to craft a future where all members can fully realize their potential through our diversity, strategic initiatives, partnerships, training, and policy development.

After working in building workforce programs and Talent Development for over eight years, he became more involved in efforts to integrate EDI as internal support, specifically in recruitment, hiring, professional development & career advancement.

Taryell Simmons is also a Board Of Director for Village UP, powering inclusivity in the San Diego Startup Space. Village Up is a collaborative initiative to increase diversity and access to the San Diego innovation economy. After winning a startup weekend pitch competition hosted by Google and Techstars, Taryell became more involved in D&I efforts to help bring diversity to the Tech Startup space. 

He is a RISE Urban Leadership graduate and a 2020 Rockwood Leadership Institute fellow. With an obsession with lifelong learning, he has worked with thousands of students, employees, entrepreneurs, and startups, supporting them through workforce development, employee training, strategic data-based strategies and partnership, execution of workforce program development, and vital alliance-building.

James L. "Jim" Banks serves as SHRM's General Counsel, managing SHRM's legal functions, overseeing the work of outside counsel, and serving as key lawyer and legal advisor on major business transactions.  

Previously, Banks served as City Attorney to the City of Alexandria, Va., representing and advising the mayor, city council, city manager and city departments on a variety of legal matters. He was previously a partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP and McGuireWoods LLP, where he focused on employment litigation.  

Banks began his legal career in Richmond, Va., and he practiced law in the private and public sectors, including serving as both prosecutor and judge. He has a broad background in legal ethics and spent over 10 years in the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary system, ultimately serving as Chair of the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board. He was an instructor for the Virginia State Bar Professionalism Course and has taught frequently on topics of ethics and professionalism.  He is also an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech in the Master of Public Administration program. 

Banks is a veteran of the U.S. Army and Virginia Army National Guard and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia, a master's degree in Public Policy from Walden University and a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College.
