Financial insecurity is a national problem affecting workers across the country. This insecurity affects you as individual worker performance and morale suffer in turn. Young, lower-income workers, are especially vulnerable and need support to develop their finances. This session will discuss the connection between financial insecurity and the workplace, the financial issues young, lower-income workers grapple with, and strategies you can consider to help this developing worker group. In this session, you will:

  • Learn what financial issues young, low- and moderate-income (LMI) workers are grappling with today.
  • Explore ways you can support the financial wellness of your young, LMI employees.
  • Identify where to learn more about workplace-based financial wellness services.

Pamela Chan is Project Director of Human Insights at Prosperity Now, a national non-profit that ensures pathways to financial stability and prosperity for everyone in the U.S.  Ms. Chan works with organizations serving economically disadvantaged communities conduct market research and create human-centered services. Prior to Prosperity Now, Ms. Chan studied how financial products, programs and regulations affect lower-income consumers and managed a national workplace savings pilot at New America. She also advised Fortune 500 companies on new product development at the Nielsen Company. She holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, Northwestern Law, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Amanda Carney is Co-Founder and President of Working Credit, a national nonprofit that offers a credit wellness program as an employee benefit. Working Credit’s unique mix of credit building education, counseling and products has strong proof of concept with 68% of participants improving their credit scores within six months and an increasing number using credit as a path to regular savings. As President, Amanda oversees strategic direction, business development, new partnerships, marketing and communications.
 
Amanda received an A.B. from Princeton University and a Masters in Management from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management.

Vishal Jain is the Financial Wellness Officer for Prudential’s Workplace Solutions Group. He leads the development and delivery of financial wellness solutions for the Workplace Solutions Group’s institutional clients and their participants.

Prior to his current role, Vishal led strategy and financial wellness for Prudential’s Group Insurance business. Vishal joined Group Insurance from Prudential's Strategic Initiatives Group, where he helped lead Prudential's cross-business thought leadership and strategic review efforts from 2008 to 2011. Earlier in his career, he was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, where he supported retirement providers, asset managers, and insurers on strategy and marketing issues.

Katherine Brune has over 15 years of experience working in the Financial Services field.  Her areas of passion and expertise include Employee Well-being, Organizational Purpose, Employee Engagement, Adult Learning, Behavioral Economics, and Project Management.

Katherine joined SunTrust in 2006 and currently leads employee well-being & benefits programs, focused on creating a culture of well-being by delivering leading well-being experiences and competitive benefits for SunTrust employees. Katherine previously led the employee engagement function where she steered the end-to-end employee engagement strategy.

Katherine has received various internal SunTrust awards including Best of the Best for all Corporate Functions in 2015. She currently sits on the Board of Advisors for Georgia Tech’s School of Economics.

Katherine received a B.S. in Economics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a M.S. in Human Resources Development from Georgia State University.

Katherine lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband and two young children.

Susan Simon is a Senior Human Resources Consultant for Campus Services at Harvard University.  Working as a HR generalist for over 20 years, she developed expertise in HR disciplines such as employee relations, performance management, recruiting and training.  Currently, she is the Training Coordinator for Campus Services, concentrating on designing and implementing responsive training programs for the diverse community of management and service & trades unionized staff.  Susan spearheaded the effort to bring Working Credit’s financial wellness program to Harvard’s dining services staff.  She sits on the board of the Harvard University Employees Credit Union.  Prior to joining Harvard University, she designed playgrounds for schools, community groups and municipalities. Susan holds a Master’s Degree in Leadership Development from Wheelock College.

Pamela Samuels-Kater is Manager, Benefits, Customer Satisfaction at AutoZone, Inc., where she leads the company’s Benefits Customer Service Center of Excellence, Retirement and Financial Wellness programs. Her creativity and ability to easily engage and connect with people enterprise-wide has allowed her to implement many projects, programs and events successfully. Through her leadership, AutoZone provides a holistic approach to educating employees about the financial wellness tools and resources available to empower them to make life-style changes which may enhance their future well-being. Through a series of onsite seminars provided in partnership with Prudential Retirement and other vendor partners, Pamela is educating employees about how they can take charge of their personal finances – from budgeting to estate planning.

To ensure the success of these programs for the employees, Pamela took the programming to the next level by making financial management a family sport. She offers opportunities to include employees’ spouses and designed a special financial management workshop for employees’ children and teens.

Pamela has more than 20 years of Human Resources (HR) experience and has held various leadership roles.  Areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, Benefits, Compensation, Training and Development, Change and Project Management.


Before joining AutoZone, Pamela led teams at International Paper, xpedx, a subsidiary of International Paper, Quantum Chemical Corporation and Book-of-the-Month Club, a subsidiary of Time, Inc.

Pamela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Business from Pennsylvania State University.

She holds a variety of training certifications and continually works to maintain and develop her skills in the ever-changing world of Human Capital Management.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Pamela now calls Memphis, TN home. She has two daughters, and enjoys spending time with her family, reading and preserving precious memories by scrapbooking.
