This session will provide an overview of the world’s first and largest technological college for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and information on how employers can tap into this resource for recruitment and hiring. You will also learn how to integrate deaf and hard-of-hearing employees in your workplace and about training resources to utilize at your organization to assist in these efforts. You will also learn more about:

  • The needs of your employees with hearing loss or that are hard of hearing.
  • How to communicate with deaf or hard-of-hearing employees on the job.
  • Strategies to help you integrate deaf and hard-of-hearing employees into the workplace.
  • Communication technology for deaf and hard-of-hearing employees.

Shyrl Scalice is Assistant Director in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Center on Employment at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.  In addition to supporting students, she provides consultation and training to numerous employer organizations nationwide on recruitment, communication and inclusion strategies related to working with deaf and hard-of-hearing employees.  She regularly participates in conferences of national organizations including the NACE, SHRM, Disability:IN and ILG.

She previously worked as a Career Consultant and Trainer with Lee Hecht Harrison, a career transition and outplacement firm where her clients were from the Financial, Pharmaceutical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing industries.  She managed Diversity Training programs and also worked as a Corporate Recruiter at Eastman Kodak.  Her areas of expertise include Career Management and Transition, Networking and Job Search Best Practices, Inclusion practices for the deaf and hard of hearing.  Shyrl holds a Master of Science degree in Education from Nazareth College and Biology degree from SUNY at Geneseo.

Pamela Christopher is employed with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).  Pamela’s primary role include working with deaf students who are seeking internship and permanent job opportunities.  Pamela also travels around the country presenting “Working Together: Deaf & Hearing People” employer’s workshop.   Pamela obtained her B.S. in Social Work and M.S in Career and Human Resources Development from RIT.  It was there she developed her passion for working with deaf students with focus on college recruitment and career development.  Pamela is hard of hearing and fluent in sign language.
