Historically, apprenticeships were the primary path to build a career for many trades, and they are still more common outside of the United States than stateside. That said, the DOL reported that the number of apprentices registered with the DOL grew 64% from 2012 to 2021, and in 2021, 27,000 registered apprenticeship programs were active in the US (including 2,879 added just in 2021).
