Home > Don't Believe What You Say About Aging: How Everyday Ageism Hides in our Words

INCLUSION 2024
Attendees will learn to convey respect for and understanding of employees of all ages by removing negative, biased language about aging and older adults from their written and spoken communications.

Seating Instructions: Seating is first-come, first-served. Reserved seating options are available for accessibility and accommodations. For detailed accessibility information, visit INFO > FAQs in the app.

As professionals in HR, communication, and training, we've learned to choose our words well and steer away from phrasing that carries bias, negative meaning, and hidden microaggressions. But there's one area where prejudice and dismissiveness are still a common part of everyday language: Talking about aging and older adults.

This session takes a deep look at where ageism hides in the language we use, and how research supports a more informed, accurate, and inclusive approach.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the impacts of ageism on employees' physical and mental health, performance, and longevity.

2. Recognize and identify ageist phrasing in a variety of written and spoken communications.

3. Practice techniques to build practical skills for avoiding-and responding to-ageism in day-to-day interactions, written communications, and more.

4. Apply self-reflection skills to analyze personal age biases and how the broader culture influences us.
