After a period of unprecedented upheaval and historically unprecedented conditions, the U.S. labor market appears to have emerged from the COVID-era into a period of comparatively normal conditions. However, the labor market remains very tight by historical standards, and is always changing in ways that create new challenges and opportunities for employers and workers alike. In this presentation, we combine data from our monthly labor market overviews to describe how the U.S. labor force has evolved in the prior year and what to expect going forward.

Learning Objective 1: Understand basic U.S. labor market metrics – Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of the critical metrics needed to understand the U.S. labor market, including the benefits and limitations of each metric.

Learning Objective 2: Current state of the U.S. labor market – Attendees will gain a detailed understanding of the current state of the U.S. labor market, both overall and by sector of interest.

Learnng Objective 3: Challenges/opportunities on the horizon – Based on current trends and future projections, attendees will gain an understanding of how the U.S. labor market is likely to evolve in the near future and what this evolution means for their organization.

Justin Ladner is a Senior Labor Economist at SHRM. His work centers on examining labor market trends and emerging issues facing employers and employees. He also has extensive experience researching occupational mobility, personnel training, recruiting, and retention. In all of these areas, he is passionate about leveraging data and analytics to inform real-world policy improvements.

Justin holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan, as well as a master’s degree in economics and bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Boston University.
