Thomas E. Perez was nominated by President Obama to serve as the nation's 26th Secretary of Labor, and was sworn in on July 23, 2013.

Previously Perez served as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice. The Civil Rights Division enforces federal laws that prohibit discrimination and uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all who live in America. During his tenure of nearly four years, Perez oversaw the effort to restore and expand the division's achievements. Under his leadership as Assistant Attorney General, the division successfully implemented the Shepard-Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act; expanded equal housing opportunity by bringing and settling the largest fair-lending cases in history; protected schoolchildren from discrimination, bullying and harassment; dramatically expanded access to employment, housing and educational opportunities for people with disabilities; protected the right to vote for all eligible voters free from discrimination; took record-setting efforts to ensure that communities have effective and democratically accountable policing; and safeguarded the employment, housing, fair lending and voting rights of service members. He also expanded the division's partnerships across federal agencies to address cross-cutting challenges in human trafficking, employment discrimination and fair lending, among others.

He previously served as the Secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. Maryland's DLLR protects consumers through the enforcement of a wide range of consumer rights laws, including the mortgage setting; enforces workplace safety laws that provide critical safeguards to workers and communities; enforces wage and hour and other worker protection laws that ensure wage security; and collaborates with businesses and workers to address critical workforce development needs and build a world-class workforce. Perez was a principal architect of a sweeping package of state lending and foreclosure reforms to address the foreclosure crisis in Maryland. He worked closely with business leaders, community colleges and nonprofits on a dramatic overhaul of Maryland's workforce development system to ensure that workers have the skills to succeed, and employers have the workforce to thrive in the 21st century economy. Perez co-chaired the Governor's Council for New Americans, which designed a comprehensive blueprint for ensuring that immigrants living and working in Maryland are a vital component of the state's economic engine.

Perez has spent his entire career in public service. From 2002 until 2006, he was a member of the Montgomery County Council. He was the first Latino ever elected to the Council, and served as Council president in 2005. Earlier in his career, he spent 12 years in federal public service, most as a career attorney with the Civil Rights Division. As a federal prosecutor for the division, he prosecuted and supervised the prosecution of some of the Justice Department's most high profile civil rights cases, including a hate crimes case in Texas involving a group of white supremacists who went on a deadly, racially-motivated crime spree.

He later served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights under Attorney General Janet Reno. Among other responsibilities, he chaired the interagency Worker Exploitation Task Force, which oversaw a variety of initiatives designed to protect vulnerable workers. He also served as special counsel to the late Senator Edward Kennedy, and was Senator Kennedy's principal adviser on civil rights, criminal justice and constitutional issues. For the final two years of the Clinton administration, he served as the Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Perez was a law professor for six years at the University of Maryland School of Law and was a part-time professor at the George Washington School of Public Health. He received a bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1983. In 1987 he received both a master's of public policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School. He lives in Maryland with his wife, Ann Marie Staudenmaier, an attorney with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, and their three children.

January 1, 2015. Yum! Brands ranked #228 on the FORTUNE 500 list with revenues of over $13 billion in 2014. In 2014, Yum! was named among the top 100 Corporate Citizens by Corporate Responsibility magazine and one of the Aon Hewitt Top Companies for Leaders in North America. The company’s restaurant brands—KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell—are the global leaders of the chicken, pizza and Mexican-style food categories. Yum! Brands employs 1.5 million company employees and franchise associates across its worldwide system. Outside the United States, the Yum! Brands system opened more than five new restaurants per day on average, making it a leader in international retail development.
 
Novak leads YUM’s Board of Directors and supports the company’s CEO on corporate strategy, innovative business and brand building ideas along with leadership development. During his tenure as CEO since 1999, Yum! Brands doubled in size to 41,000 restaurants and established itself as a global powerhouse going from approximately 20 percent of its profits coming from outside the United States in 1997 to nearly 70 percent in 2014, while remaining an industry leader in return on invested capital. In so doing, Yum! Brands’ compound annual shareholder return has been 16% and its market capitalization has grown to nearly $32 billion from just over $4 billion.
 
Novak wrote TAKING PEOPLE WITH YOU: The Only Way to Make BIG Things Happen (January 2012), a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best seller based on a successful leadership program he personally taught at the company
centered on teamwork and a belief in people that rewards and recognizes customer-focused behavior. Proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to the United Nations World Food Programme.
 
His latest book is, O Great One! (May 2016) in which he draws on personal, real-life experiences to explore with readers the awesome power and great impact of recognition.
 
Prior to leading Yum! Brands, Novak was president at both KFC and Pizza Hut, and held senior management positions at Pepsi-Cola Company, including chief operating officer, and executive vice president of Marketing and Sales.
 
Novak has been recognized as “2012 CEO of the Year” by Chief Executive magazine, one of the world’s “30 Best CEOs” by Barron’s, one of the “Top People in Business” by FORTUNE and one of the “100 Best-Performing CEOs in the World” by Harvard Business Review. In the April 2015, he received the prestigious 2015 Horatio Alger Award for his commitment to philanthropy and higher education and became a lifetime member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. He is the recipient of the 2012 UN World Food Program Leadership Award for Yum! Brands World Hunger Relief effort that raises awareness, volunteerism and funds to address this global problem. He also received the national 2008 Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. Novak is on the board of directors of the World Food Program USA. He is also a member of The Business Council and The American Society for Corporate Executives. He devotes considerable personal support to the United Nations World Food Programme and Dare to Care Food Bank hunger relief. Novak and his wife Wendy established the Lift a Life Foundation in 1999 to help individuals in need reach their full potential through grants and programming in the areas of hunger relief, education, juvenile diabetes, the military and family and youth issues. In 2012, Lift a Life Foundation and USA TODAY Charitable Foundation launched the “Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership Challenge” to encourage middle and high school students to hone their leadership skills through hunger relief projects using principles from TAKING PEOPLE WITH YOU. Since its inception, nearly a million students in 3,500 schools and clubs participated across all 50 states donating more than 22,000 volunteer hours and one million meals to hungry families. Lead2Feed is the nation’s leading and fastest growing free service learning program offering students the chance to win over $275,000 in prize money grants contributed to U.S. public charities engaged in hunger relief programs and $100,000 in technology packages for winning schools.

Margaret Heffernan is an entrepreneur, chief executive and author. She was born in Texas, raised in
Holland and educated at Cambridge University. She worked in BBC Radio for five years where she
wrote, directed, produced and commissioned dozens of documentaries and dramas. As a television
producer, she made documentary films for Timewatch, Arena and Newsnight. She was one of the
producers of Out of the Doll's House, the prize-winning documentary series about the history of
women in the twentieth century. She designed and executive produced a thirteen part series on the
French Revolution for the BBC and A&E. The series featured, among others, Alan Rickman, Alfred
Molina, Janet Suzman, Simon Callow and Jim Broadbent and introduced both historian Simon
Schama and playwright Peter Barnes to British television. She also produced music videos with
Virgin Records and the London Chamber Orchestra to raise attention and funds for Unicef's
Lebanese fund.
 
Leaving the BBC, she ran the trade association IPPA, which represented the interests of
independent film and television producers and was once described by the Financial Times as "the
most formidable lobbying organization in England."
 
In 1994, she returned to the United States where she worked on public affair campaigns in
Massachusetts and with software companies trying to break into multimedia. She developed
interactive multimedia products with Peter Lynch, Tom Peters, Standard & Poors and The Learning
Company.
 
She then joined CMGI where she ran, bought and sold leading Internet businesses, serving as chief
executive officer for InfoMation Corporation, ZineZone Corporation and iCAST Corporation. She was
named one of the Internet's Top 100 by Silicon Alley Reporter in 1999, one of the Top 25 by
Streaming Media magazine and one of the Top 100 Media Executives by The Hollywood Reporter.
Her "Tear Down the Wall" campaign against AOL won the 2001 Silver SABRE award for public
relations.
 
2011 saw the publication of her third book, Willful Blindness (Simon&Schuster in the UK, Bloomsbury
in the US and Doubleday in Canada) which was shortlisted for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs
Best Business Book award. She is visiting professor of entrepreneurship at Simmons College in
Boston and executive in residence at Babson College. She sits on the Council of the Royal Academy
of Dramatic Art in the UK as well as one the boards of several private companies. Heffernan blogs
for the Huffington Post in the US and the UK and for BNET. She was featured on television in The
Secret Millionaire and on BBC Radio 4 in Changing the Rules, which won the 2008 Prowess Media
Award. She has had three plays broadcast by the BBC and in 2011 has been awarded an honorary
doctorate from the University of Bath. She is married with two children.

Paul Begala is a commentator for CNN, where he is part of the political team that has won both an “Emmy” and a “Peabody Award”.  In the 2012 campaign he was a senior adviser for the pro-Obama Super PAC, making Begala one of the few people to play a critical role in electing two different presidents.

After helping engineer Bill Clinton's presidential campaign with his partner, James Carville, Begala served as counselor to the President, one of Clinton's closest aides. He has consulted for political campaigns across the country and around the world, including advising politicians in Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.

Former President Bill Clinton described his longtime friend and former aide as, "a witty dynamo from Sugar Land, Texas...who brought energy, focus and credibility to our efforts."  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says Begala, "embodies a passion for populism with a commitment to civility, no easy feat."

And radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has said of Begala, "If you don't know who The Forehead is, Paul Begala, he's the guy, the kid that played the banjo on the bridge in the movie Deliverance."

He helped his friend John F. Kennedy, Jr. launch the political magazine George and wrote the "Capitol Hillbilly" column, and is the author of several New York Times best-selling political books.

Begala is an affiliated professor of Public Policy at Georgetown University.  He has also taught at the University of Texas and the University of Georgia.  Along with James Carville and GOP strategist Karl Rove, he was a recently inducted into the American Association of Political Consultants' Hall of Fame.
