Competencies: Interpersonal (Behavioral), Leadership (Behavioral) | Intended Audience: Advanced (Elevating I&D)
Workplace Application:
Learn about the hyper-masculine pressures that harm male employees especially, and how to help all employees work in healthier, more inclusive ways.

"F* the Tough Guy Show." These words were spoken by an executive at a ski resort, after two male employees committed suicide in the span of 18 months.

Many organizations today are working to foster psychological safety, collaboration and a sense of belonging. But deep-seated, hyper-masculine beliefs work against these initiatives. By looking down on vulnerability, lionizing rugged individualism and obsessing over winning, the "tough guy" ideal has harmed individuals, hurt team performance and undermined inclusion.

Learning Objectives:

  • The ways in which an outdated, "confined" masculinity leads men (and others) to perform the "tough guy show" in ways that harm people and organizations.
  • How a "liberating" version of manhood is emerging, one that frees men and all those around to thrive at work, at home and in the world.
  • Concrete practices to help employees evolve beyond the "tough guy show" for greater wellbeing, improved performance and a healthier, more inclusive culture.
